Hosted by the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters and The Parade, Norwood, one of Adelaide's premier fashion shopping destinations, the 2012 Adelaide Fashion Festival promises to shine a spotlight on Adelaide and the dynamic and innovative South Australian fashion industry ‐ while also bringing style and glamour into town just in time for Spring. Fashion Festival Coordinator, Cristina Tridente said, “The 2012 Adelaide Fashion Festival is set to WOW ‐ it will exude the style and glamour of our established designers, while also unveiling some of South Australia’s best emerging talent. This year’s program offers something that will appeal to everyone, including a mix of the high‐end ticketed shows to free community and family‐friendly events.”

When she was younger, Stacey Hendrickson dreamed of floaty picnic dresses, cute bustiers and pretty pastels. The Adelaide beauty brought casper&pearl to life in 2011 and just one year on the brand has gained a huge following, especially in the social media world, which has led to her dress being featured on Teen Vogue along with sending garments to cute-as-pie singer, Lisa Mitchell (I adore her!). The label's aesthetic is flirty, girly and whimsical, embodying every girl's dreams in the form of incredibly beautiful handmade clothing!

casper&pearl recently wrapped up shooting the lookbook for their transeasonal A/W 2013 collection, '
Secret Garden' and as with all of their clothing, the collection promises to capture the hearts of girls everywhere. 'Secret Garden' is bright colours aplenty along with their signature adorable little dresses and shorts as well as seeing the brand branch out by featuring a number of black pieces as well as knitwear - what more could a girl want?!

The lovely designer of
casper&pearl, Stacey (the beauty above), was kind enough to share some of her inspirations behind the brand and the new collection!

omg: How old were you when you started casper&pearl?
c&p: I launched casper&pearl fresh out of high school when I was eighteen, but it was a long time coming before that!

omg: Where does the name casper&pearl originate from?
c&p: I'm really inspired by the innocent and girly nature that c&p radiates, so I named the brand after my childhood best friend and I (everyone used to call me Casper because of my pale skin). Pearl used to live across the road from me and we would play every day in flowery fields and have tea parties, which is what I like to imagine girls do when they wear the brand.

omg: Describe casper&pearl in three words.
c&p: Imaginative, feminine and fun!

omg: What or who are your biggest inspirations?
Most of my inspiration walls are plastered with vintage photos from the 70's and 90's, Valentino and Chloe, art and nature.

omg: What's the inspiration behind the upcoming A/W 2013 collection, 'Secret Garden'?
c&p: For this collection I took inspiration from the story ‘Secret Garden’ by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I was really inspired by floral embroidery, which is featured throughout the collection with flowers that I hand drew. With each collection I really love to tell poetic stories and have hidden meanings; for me this range is a metaphor for how I grew this brand from the ground up out of basically nothing, and I’ve really enjoyed watching it blossom and grow into something so beautiful and appreciated.

omg: Describe the ultimate casper&pearl girl.
c&p: Free-spirited, passionate and happy.

omg: If you could choose anyone to wear your clothes, who would it be?
c&p: I would love to see casper&pearl being worn by Isabel Lucas, Alexa Chung or the Jenner sisters! A girl can dream.

omg: If you weren't designing, what would you be doing?
c&p: Maybe graphic design or photography. I love marketing too! But this way I get to do all four and I love every minute of it!

omg: What is your most treasured item in your wardrobe?
c&p:My grandma passed down some beautiful clothing to me from the 70s, I cherish them too much to even wear out! Or my faux fur vest, I never take it off!

omg: What are your aspirations for casper&pearl?
c&p: My dream has always been to make somebody’s favourite brand, and if I can do that then I’ll be happy. I would also love to see c&p being sold in more stores across Australia and NZ!

Adelaide's own Jaimie Sortino on A Night of Fashion at the Art Gallery

Jaimie Sortino
It's taken more than a year to prepare, but Adelaide's couture dressmaker Jaimie Sortino is finally ready for what he says is his biggest parade ever. For the first time, he'll show alongside a glittering array of local and national designers, including Carla Zampatti and Willow at A Night of Fashion at the Art Gallery. Not only that, but he'll be among the first designers to ever show in the Elder wing of the Art Gallery of South Australia. But the 23-year-old says there are no nerves.

"It's more exciting (than nerve-racking)," he says. "I've always wanted to show at the art gallery."
"When I found out it was here (at the gallery) it made me ten times happier."

Jaimie Sortino at the Art Gallery of South Australia
The grand architecture of the gallery has informed the 15 designs Sortino will be releasing for the first time at the event.
"I came here for inspiration and it's kind of a view of soft white romantic Paris," he says.
"I automatically just thought of floaty, elegant, big, and something white just came to me and I ran with white the whole way through.

The gowns, which are all white, comprise Sortino's only collection for the year.
"I try not to go towards seasons, only because I don't like the words spring/summer/winter/autumn," he says, adding that the pressure of seasonal production can be too much for a single dressmaker. "A lot of people think there are other people working on it, but it's just me working on it."

Sortino says he's learnt from previous mistakes, dropping perceived pretension by producing a collection that is more wearable.
"I definitely like to tell a story with my fashion but I've edited it not to be so literal," he says.
"And that's where I think I got lost last year; I just got very literal in what I wanted to do, and (this year) I just went away and really edited myself.
"(Now) I've found a really good balance between making wearable art and making something that also appeals to the customer who has to buy it, and I really listened to the people that wear my stuff.
"I'm excited to see them on the runway, because they've just been sitting on my mannequins for the last year and a half."

To be among the exclusive crowd who will view the designs on the runway at the art gallery, you can purchase tickets here. Other designers showing on the night include Bianca Spender, Willow, Carla Zampatti, Scanlan and Theodore, Couture + Love + Madness, Paolo Sebastian, with curated collections from Claire Inc and The New Guard. Tickets include pre-show cocktails and after-party access.

One Teaspoon leather jacket | Mimco necklace (gift from Mimco) | Cameo dress

It really is impossible to say no to a dress with a beautiful texture like this Cameo piece from their Dream Machine summer 2011 collection - and that's before it's $10 at the brand's sample sale. If you're a fan of Cameo, Keepsake or Finders Keepers and you've never been to an Australian Fashion Labels sample sale, it's well worth your time. And as sample sales go, they're usually relatively elbow-free.

We've been working very hard on our first seasonal collection for A/W 2013 'Secret Garden' and it's been so hard to keep it all to ourselves until the launch early next year. So we just had to share some beautiful behind the scenes images from our lookbook shoot we had on Tuesday. We chose the most beautiful girl from Finesse Models named Sarah Davies to represent this range and we're so happy with the results! Enjoy these pretty photos to get you a bit excited. If you own a boutique and would like to pre-order the range email us at hello@casperandpearl.com

Lots of love from the c&p girls xx

Candles.....

Murris Johnson has always had an interest in candles, remembering times from her childhood, when the power went out, they would have to light candles.

From this childhood interest she has now foundered her own website; Orthodoxcandles.com, dedicated to educate people about beeswax candles. Murris explains that "millions of people use candles daily, and many of them prefer using beeswax candles. I noticed there were tons of websites online that sell these candles, but none that are dedicated to educating people about them."

She goes on to say that "people often search for information on how to make beeswax candles, where to buy them, the different types available, and different accessories that can be used when making or burning them. Since that information usually comes from commercial websites selling candles or trying to promote a product, I felt that a website was needed to provide that information to the public for FREE"

Orthodoxcandles.com has been online for a few years now, however only recently Murris decided to finish the development of the site. In the near future she plans on putting up articles dealing with every topic imaginable regarding beeswax candles.

For more info, check out: http://www.orthodoxcandles.com/
